ideas involved in the design of the solutions meant that they were also choosing to continually better their progress and share results with friends. For those studying within the academic context (eg the Harper Collins revision aids or preparing for language training skills with Learnosity – Box 4) a clear motivator for learners is their desire to know that they are ready for the test and to practice in a safe place until they are ready.

It’s all about ‘the voice’ There is real power of the spoken word in the learning process that mobile technology can exploit. The Royal School of Artillery app uses commands issued once via audio to provide a realistic scenario for soldiers learning to respond as a team. Learnosity first won its awards for speech capture in assessment of language learning. Everyone can take advantage of an authentic environment for

Box 2: LINE Communications and the Royal School of Artillery

The Royal School of Artillery worked with LINE to create a blended learning programme essential for ensuring that costly mistakes on the battlefield which can result in injury or death by friendly fire are avoided. The programme is designed to help key roles on the battlefield communicate clearly, unambiguously and accurately under pressure, maximising impact and reducing costly mistakes. The iPad provides opportunity for everyone to practice and learn.

Ingredients for success  Creation of a single user immersive exercise that could be completed prior to joining the course reducing the need for assessment on day one.

 Up front learning in the classroom is reduced: following basic instruction given by the trainer, trainees can immerse themselves much faster into the learning points and interactive

exercises on the iPad  Multiuser immersive exercises allow students to

connect wirelessly, ensuring that everyone takes an active part rather than watching a few colleagues work on a scenario role play.

 PC and LMS versions allow those without mobile devices to continue to revise and practice if they don’t have access to mobile technology – preventing the problem of skills fade.

 The exercises are timed and students can compete against each other by linking their iPads together providing a competitive edge to the process.

 Instructions are issued once using audio and from there the individual has to act – closely mimicking the real world.

Benefits

The programme has reduced the time it takes for troops to gain certification. It has cut costs relating to the production of written materials and which has made the training available at all times for revision purposes. Silver for Best Mobile Learning Project 2011
