services) within the aircraft will need to be such that an attacker cannot access one from another. Similarly, interconnected airspace and reservation systems, crossing regional and national boundaries, pose a significant opportunity to a cyber terrorist, nation state or hacktivist. The potential to disrupt or degrade such a service remotely is something which will be attractive to these groups and, assuming these systems are built on industry-standard components, exploits can be researched and developed before being used. It is also highly likely that such systems will favour availability over security, and so will not be as regularly patched or upgraded in comparison to a standard corporate environment.

Recent events have indicated that organisations can be disrupted, embarrassed and financially damaged through cyber attacks. Whilst criminals quickly identified the financial benefits that could be gained by accessing data and exploiting systems, over the last 12 months protest groups have also recognised that the cyber world provides new opportunities for their activities. Disgruntled or careless staff continue to create new risks for organisations, and threats continue to develop requiring ongoing patching of software and continued active cyber intelligence. The increased awareness in the aviation industry is making it more difficult to disrupt services or steal data, however as with other security threats, it is an ever-evolving process. Those seeking to disrupt have more time and in some cases more resources to explore and exploit vulnerabilities than any one organisation has to defend against such attacks.
