12 MARCH: WASHINGTON DC

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Ahmed Ressam's 22-year sentence in 2005 for the attempted bombing of Los Angeles International Airport

was unreasonably lenient and accordingly sent the case back to a Seattle federal judge for resentencing with the recommendation that Ressam be given a term in line with federal sentencing guidelines that call for 65 years to life for the offences for which he was convicted. The original judge had exercised leniency as Ressam had identified 150 other jihadists and had testified in two trials that resulted in convictions.

13 MARCH: CALIFORNIA

Robert Howard Claudio, 23, was charged with false imprisonment and sexual battery for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy in the toilets of a public library

and, in August 2011, an 18-year-old man in the toilets of John Wayne Airport.

14 MARCH: TEL AVIV A former Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) employee and a former police officer were arrested for allegedly accepting bribes of around 100,000 Israeli Sheqels (c. US $25k) in exchange for helping Israeli citizens who were restricted from leaving the country, generally due to impending court proceedings, exit Israel via Ben Gurion International Airport. Those people they helped would pay a deposit and then pay the balance at the airport on the day of travel.

14 MARCH: BIRMINGHAM, UK Rosa Van Kesteren, 25, Paul Wilkinson, 28, and Liz Snook, 34, were each fined £150 and ordered to pay costs of £80 and a victim surcharge of £15 for their environmental protest at Birmingham Airport last October. The three Plane Stupid campaigners had stripped naked and daubed their bodies with slogans in red paint.

15 MARCH: CHICAGO

Elaine Robertson, 61, was arrested for trying to take a .25 calibre RG Industries semi-automatic on to a plane; she claimed she was unaware that the gun was in her bag.

16 MARCH: MADURAI, INDIA An official was arrested before boarding a Jet Airways flight to Chennai when security found a box containing 21 bullets in his baggage; he claimed that his Personal Assistant had inadvertently put the bullet box in his personal baggage instead of a medicine box.

16 MARCH: NEW YORK

As we only normally report unusual methods of concealing narcotics (too many other incidents to report otherwise),

this incident was worthy of note. Eduardo Delgado was arrested on arrival from Lima, Peru, carrying what appeared to be plastic plates. Three of the plates felt unusually thick; on further inspection they tested positive for cocaine.
