President’s Message
Get out and experience the Downers Grove Park District!
IDear Residents, f you stopped by McCollum Park lately, you’ve noticed the Infrastructure Renovation project construction
continued throughout the winter months, including installation of new ball field backstops, electrical wiring for energy efficient sports lighting, and foundations for the new picnic pavilion and restroom & concession building. Late spring brings the completion of the ball field fencing, installation of the sports lighting poles and fixtures, and construction of the picnic pavilion and restroom & concession building. The 50-acre park serves thousands of people every week from April through October and is also home to the most affordable fun in town at the 18-hole McCollum Park Miniature Golf facility.
As spring turns to summer, thoughts of outdoor activities, walks in the park, and fun-filled summer days fill our minds. Make plans now to stop by the Downers Grove Golf Club for your first swing of the summer season. Site of America’s first 18-hole Golf Course, the Downers Grove Golf Club is now a 9-hole, par 36 course offering group lessons, outings, tournaments and camps.
In addition to golf camps, the Park District has planned more than fifty camps this summer including cultural and performing arts, sports, history, and nature. There are also early childhood camps, half-day and full-day camps and teen traveling camps. If you’re looking for a less structured experience, try an invigorating walk on the trails or a peaceful encounter with nature at the District’s Natural Areas, Lyman Woods and Belmont Prairie. Or take a stroll through the grounds of Wandschneider Park for a glimpse back into the past at the Downers Grove Park District Museum.
Get your blanket and picnic basket ready for the free Family Concert Series at the new Veterans Memorial Pavilion in Fishel Park. Presented by Downers Grove Park District and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, the series begins May 22nd with a dedication ceremony for Veterans Memorial Pavilion followed by the opening concert at 6:30 pm. After a short break, concerts will continue on Tuesday evenings at 7pm from June 5th through August 7th.
On June 24th, the 35th Annual DG 5 Miler, (formerly the 5 & 10 Miler) will travel through the streets of Downers Grove. Start your training plan now with a membership to 4500 Fitness. Located in the Recreation & Fitness Center facility, 4500 Fitness offers more than 40 cardiovascular machines, 50 group exercise classes per week, a 3-lane suspended track, member only locker room facilities, and personal training, massage and child care services.

The Downers Grove Park District was created in 1946 as a special unit of local government when a group of citizens envisioned the establishment of a park and recreation system to serve area residents. The Park District’s mission is to provide a wide variety of year-round recreation programs, facilities, parks, open space and natural areas that respond to the articulated needs and desires of residents.
