CODA A sideways look at the games industry

THE INDUSTRY IN 140 CHARACTERS A month in tweets by the industry elite

@Jason_Rubin Lots of people saying “please save

THQ because they make some of my favorite games”. People, that’s why I signed on.

(Jason Rubin, THQ) June 3rd

@martinhollis NintendoLand is the closest thing I’ve

seen to a nod to Disney from Nintendo. Disneyland has had a huge influence, centrally Super Mario 64. (Martin Hollis, games designer) June 5th

@wilw This is your man on the scene, Scoop

Wheaton, reporting that there is nothing to currently report at #E3.

(Wil Wheaton, actor and, it seems, games journalist) June 5th

@numberless I want to start a Kickstarter Project

called “I Backed ‘I Backed Kickstarter’ on Kickstarter”.

(Scott Jon Siegel, Popcap) June 5th

@majornelson The Friday after coming home from

#E3 is a strange combination of exhaustion and relief.

(Larry Hryb, Microsoft) June 8th

@pottan There’s a lot of pointing and clicking

in #Diablo3 and it’s certainly an adventure. What does that make it?

(Patrick Liu, DICE) June 8th

@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN

Going under the bridge Snake dived in MGS2 tanker scene’s opening. It’s been 13 years?

(Hideo Kojima, Kojima Productions) June 9th

@charltonbrooker Had a thing published today

bemoaning poor female characters & immediately lots of comments from men sobbing that they’re misrepresented too. (Charlie Brooker , celebrity journalist) June 18th

@wonderlandblog Dear @EU_Commission. This Science,

It’s a Girl Thing, the pink lipstick logo, the sexy wiggles, the stilettoes. No.

(Alice Taylor, MakieLab) June 22nd

@SpiltMilkStudio If you make a game for 3DS that’d be

better with two sticks you’re an idiot. The hardware is what it is. Design for it. #design101 (Andrew John Smith, Spilt Milk Studio) June 22nd

AN OPEN MIND CLIFFY BLEZINSKI

Epic’s less than shy games designer tells Xbox360achievments.org why games are becoming too easy

72% Easy video games

12% Difficult video games

16% Systems

interacting with systems

Telling Xbox360acheivements.org how he feels about the current generation of games and their difficulty: It feels like in this current console generation that we’ve taken a lot of steps to grow the audience, and what I think’s happened is that the games have become more linear and easier, so it feels like a lot of quick-time events.

More on the matter, and on being challenged by systems: The more I play games like that the more I turned off to them and just want to get back to systems interacting with systems, and get back to a game that, you know; when was the last time a game really challenged you and asked something of you, right?

And finally, on the kind of difficult games Cliffy B likes: There’s a reason why Demon Souls and Dark Souls have taken off lately. It’s because they really require you actually try.

IT FIGURES : E3 2012
