Flush with cash?

In the current highly competitive marketplace, cash-conscious companies are looking for products and services that are both effective and economical. Keri Reynolds, Marketing Manager for PHS Washrooms, explains how a clean and green approach can benefit businesses.

The 21st century demands that we are all multi-taskers. At home we strive to be domestic gods/goddesses, technical whizzes (for the computer, smartphone and DVD), interior designers and landscape gardeners, alongside looking after children, loved ones and ourselves! At work our responsibilities have broadened too, with many people now trying to increase their attractiveness to current and potential employers by widening their skill sets and adding ‘more strings to their bows’.

Companies across the board, be they public or private sector, are also feeling the pressure to offer more – to both their clients and staff – and are looking for suppliers and partners to help them achieve this. Washroom hygiene is a good example where a number of different business needs and ambitions can be fulfilled with a trusted name, like PHS, to supply the right products for their requirements.

Keep it clean Well-equipped washrooms are a must on a number of levels. Companies have a duty of care to their employees and customers to

provide easily accessible washroom facilities that meet the highest hygiene standards. Not only does this create a good visual impression – offering a welcoming, comfortable environment – it suggests business success and a commitment to caring for staff and visitors.

It also makes sound economic sense. According to a CBI/Pfizer survey conducted during January and February 2011, the UK economy lost 190 million working days to absence in 2010 – costing employers £17bn. When employees are ill and can’t work, companies suffer from disruption to their business, loss of productivity and a dip in customer satisfaction rates.

Germs thrive in environments where people come into close contact with each other so the common cold, flu and other infections love the workplace. According to the NHS’s hand washing campaign – www.wash-hands.com – there are a number of facts that may encourage employers to increase their efforts to promote the value of hand washing to their employees:

• Norovirus, a common form of sickness and diarrhoea, can result in individuals being off work for up to four days.

• Up to half of all men and a quarter of all women fail to wash their hands after they’ve been to the toilet.

• We have between two and ten million bacteria between our fingertips and elbow.

• The number of germs on your fingertips doubles after you use the toilet.

• Germs can stay alive on hands for up to three hours.

Although it’s not a glamorous or hi-tech solution, the simple act of washing your hands Continued on page 62
