Centre for the Integration of Sustainable Energy Technologies (CISET)
CiSET Motivation: CiSET’s mission reflects growing sensitivity to rising energy costs and increased awareness of both environmental considerations and the need for security of energy supply.
CiSET’s Mission: To ‘Minimise environmental impact through the planning, design, integration, optimisation and demonstration of locally sourced, cost effective and reliable sustainable energy solutions for Cool- Marine climate regions’.
CiSET Research Activity: CiSET conducts research across the following five themes:
Theme 1 Sustainable Energy Production Technologies BioEnergy, Heat Pumps, Solar Thermal, Solar PV and Wind Turbines
Theme 2 Sustainable Energy Integration & Applications
Thermal Storage & Distribution, Control, System Selection, Sizing and Optimisation
Theme 3 Energy Utilisation, Management & Recovery
Energy Utilisation and Management, Heat Recovery
Theme 4 Energy Resource Efficiency and Planning Resource assessment, energy efficiency and recovery, design for the environment
Theme 5 Sustainable Energy Awareness and E-Learning
KDP-Energy and E-Learning environments
CiSET Unique Capability: Over the past 5 years CiSET has developed a unique research capability to deliver its mission which is based around:
1. A group of 10 multi-disciplinary researchers from engineering and science who share a common interest and commitment to sustainable (energy) development
2. Over €2 million worth of fully-integrated and functioning physical research capability that will allow CiSET researchers generate new research findings over the next 5-10 years. This high calibre equipment underpins research Themes 1 and 2 and consists of:
• Heat Pump (Ground Source) Test Facility unique test facility in Europe
•
Solar Thermal Test Facility (incl. DAQ) to BSEN 12976 International Test Standard
• Wind PowerTest Facility to IEC 61400-2 International Test Standard
•
Aquaculture Re-circulating Test Facility unique national research facility
• Refrigeration and Cold Room Test Facility unique research and test facility
This equipment has already provided the basis for PhD research on Climate Sensitive Design (CSD) of integrated sustainable energy systems which delivered significant performance improvements. Further PhD research on hybrid energy systems selection and sizing is underway and yielding positive insights for optimised systems.
3. A novel software resource or web application described as a Knowledge Discovery Portal for Energy (KDP-Energy). This software resource will facilitate dissemination of findings to create awareness of sustainable energy technologies and support e-learning, both targets of Theme 5.
