Research in GMIT

Research is becoming an increasingly important part of GMIT’s activities. A vibrant research community is growing year by year and there is a focus on providing a supportive and stimulating environment for research students. Research facilities have improved substantially in recent years and state-of-the-art equipment is available in the three main research centres.

GMIT has research opportunities across a number of disciplines at both Masters and Doctorate levels.

The main research centres are: •

Marine and Freshwater Research Centre (MFRC)

• Galway Medical Device Technology Centre (GMedTech) •

Centre for the Integration of Sustainable Energy Technologies (CiSET) From time to time, postgraduate opportunities will be advertised in these centres as projects commence.

GMIT also has a vibrant research cluster known as the West of Ireland Heritage, Arts & Tourism (WIHAT) Research Group. Research opportunities also arise in Business, Science, Humanities, Engineering and Computing.

In keeping with the ethos of the Institute, research projects tend to be of an applied nature. Where possible, external funding is sought to support the student and the project. Self-funding opportunities can also be discussed with prospective supervisors.

RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS

During 2013, GMIT will announce a number of research scholarships to coincide with its 40th anniversary. Details will be published on the GMIT website.
