Course Overview
GMIT Letterfrack offers an intensive 18 month Higher Diploma in Arts in Education (Technology). This programme is level 8 on the NQAI framework and is offered on a full-time basis over two academic years at the GMIT Dublin Road Galway campus. The 18 places on this programme are restricted to graduates who hold a minimum 2.2 Honours Bachelor Degree from GMIT Letterfrack.
This programme was developed in response to the large number of GMIT Letterfrack graduates wishing to up-skill and enter the teaching profession, carrying with them their unique practical skills as well as industrial experiences. This highly specialised programme will offer graduates a direct route to a full-time career in teaching a range of higher level Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate practical subjects.
Learners will build upon the broad range of knowledge, skills and experiences acquired in their primary degrees and will study, develop and put into practice the numerous skills and strategies necessary to excel as a teacher in the modern technology subject classroom. Over the course of this programme, learners will be exposed to the most modern of teaching methodologies as well as a comprehensive study of educational theory, all of which will form the basis for subsequent lesson planning, delivery and reflection. An in-depth study of educational psychology, teaching and learning techniques, lesson planning, classroom management and assessment strategies will empower learners to plan, prepare and deliver their classes in a creative and interesting manner, allowing them to strive for nothing but the highest standards of professionalism as contemporary teachers.
Practical teaching skills will be developed and honed first during simulated microteaching classroom environments and then during three teaching practice blocks in real world classrooms around the country, all under the support and guidance of GMIT Letterfrack’s dedicated teaching team.
