D&T SHOW SURVEY AS
ORGANISER PLANS
REVAMP
The organisers of the Design andTechnology with ICT Showare planning a complete revamp of the event which is nowscheduled to take place in 2013. The format, timing and
venue are all being looked at and to this end a survey is being carried out of teachers’ views of this. A copy of the survey is to be found on Technology in Education’swebsite shortly. AndrewMorton of the
THE FASHIONWORLDis not a regular territory forTechSoft, so theywere delighted to accept an invitation to part of the glitzy extravaganza that is the Clothes ShowLive at the NEC inDecember. The invitation came from
HarrietVine, the joint owner and creative force behind jewellery company Tatty Devine. TechSoft andHarriet had joined forces on two occasions in 2011 to deliver laser-cut jewelleryworkshops at the BritishMuseumas part of the SamsungDigital Centre programme for young people. The success of these, and the strongworking relationship relationship that developed, suggested toHarriet that live laser-cuttingmight be a great attraction for their stand at the Clothes Show– and so it proved. Productionwasmanaged by
TimElderton and Andrew Gregory fromTechSoft. TechSoft’s 2DDesign software was used as both a creative tool and themeans bywhich to output any of the huge library of pre-made ‘Tatty’ designs

from the hard drive. Tatty Devine’s designmanager Becs Thompsonworked alongside tomatch orders to files and to pass on files for cutting. Becs also proved to be a stern taskmaster! Tim and Andrewhad a straightforward CAD/CAM task on their hands, but achieved a level of detail that would pass Becs’ stringent quality-control took things to another level. Itwas a fascinating
experience that clearly demonstratedwhy Tatty Devine stands out fromits imitators andwhy it is established as a bone fide ‘cool brand’. So is this a newdeparture
for TechSoft?Not really, as TimElderton explains: “The Clothes ShowLive is huge

and attracts thousands of students and young people seeking inspiration and ideas for their own projects and an insight into possible careers. “It’s easy to be dismissive
about fashion as a fickle world, but it’s equally true thatUK fashion isworld class andmassively important to our economy. The next generation of fashion designers are in our schools nowandmost have access to 2DDesign
software.Many will have access to laser cutting – hopefully a TechSoft LaserCam! These tools are more than capable of creating the coolest of project work and ourworkwith Tatty Devine gave solid proof of this in the right place with the right people. “We can’t give away trade
secrets, but there ismuchwe have learned about the commercial application of CAD/CAMthatwewill be building into our training materials and Inset offerings.”

in Education title change
Technology in Education has been publishing for 30 years and during that time the publication has developed fromjust reporting on resources for craft design and technology into amagazine covering all aspects ofD&T as well ICT and science – in other words the STEMsubjects. In viewof the proposed
changes to the national curriculum,we believe the time has come to amend the title. Youmay have noticed the magazine’s newmasthead on the front cover. However,we are anxious to
hear your views.We are cognisant of the vital element of engineering butwe are not sure of including a reference to it in the title. So drop us a line to
