LETTERS NewTrophy Presented for Children’s Contest Sir, I came across
this trophy [below] among my late husband’s effects. It had been overlooked and put away. He had it engraved with a view to having it presented to a youngster’s class or competition. As you know Jeff had a keen interest in teaching young people and had pupils up at the College for their certificates. I would be happy for you to select a suitable occasion for the trophy to be used and I am sure that Jeff would have been happy with your choice. His friends Albert Briggs and David Little have compiled this short resume of his career:After leaving the RAF at the end of WW2 Jeff continued his piping by becoming a member of the Scottish Regimental Association of Yorkshire Pipe Band (the Yorkshire Jocks) until leaving to become in 1960 to become a founder member of the City of Leeds Pipe Band. Anniversary of “D” Company- Buffalo City Guard – Gordon Highlanders. “D” Company was one of five companies formed to defend the city of Buffalo, New York, in 1837. Among its ranks were several

position he held for the next 14 years, he took a keen interest in the promotion and teaching of Scottish culture. A school teacher by profession he quickly was able to start a class for learners in conjunction with the local education authority’s education programme.When this class was eventually withdrawn from the programme he was able to persuade his local vicar to allow the class to continues in the church crypt. Through his encouragement and teaching abilities many young people, and older, were introduced to piping and a steady stream of new blood was introduced to the band. Jeff, who was proud to learn that one of his former pupils had been appointed P/M of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, continued his interest in teaching and playing right up until his passing in 2007.
