growth in Asia region demand for fashion goods had encouraged that company to recently launch a new premium product called ‘Red Carpet Logistics’ (RCL). “Tat service combines the transportation of high- end labels in and out of Asia with dedicated warehousing,” he explained. Sonntag said that having initially launched
RCL in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, towards the end of last year and opened a dedicated fashion warehouse in that country at Sha Alam, followed by the opening of a second similar facility in Beijing in January this year, Logwin now plans to roll out its new RCL product Asia-wide. Other locations already on the list, he added, include Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai. Servicing the air freight requirements of the
global fashion industry often involves offering a wide range of options from chartered aircraft to scheduled freighter and bellyhold capacity through to on-board courier operations. “Te lower quality, lower value end of the
textiles business generally only requires a standard air freight service. It usually involves large volumes which have to reach a market by a certain time but which have no particular urgency,” considers Lufthansa Cargo’s Hernig. “However, the higher-end textiles, with
their greater product value and time-to- market considerations, require faster solutions and shorter transit times – what is usually referred to as an ‘A’ service. Tat might be because of a quick change in demand, for example the weather suddenly turns good and people want to buy new swimsuits, or because a retailer is working with very, very low inventories and needs a constant fast supply of goods to its stores.”
High-end goods Further comment on the requirement of the global fashion industry for a wide range of air freight services is provided by Nicolas Saignat, director industries, including fashion, for Franco-Dutch airline group Air France-KLM Cargo (AF-KL Cargo) and Martinair Cargo, who is based at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. the fashion and luxury brands industry and the customers – which for us are the freight forwarders – have some very different requirements,” he declared. For standard regular product flows to
replenish stock on the shelves the need is usually for the group’s basic air freight product, said Saignat. However, for luxury goods with a high market value, the sort of products it mainly handles out of France, the demand might be for AF-KL Cargo’s Variation Safe product which offers extra security features. “Te shippers want to know that their goods will be protected all the way along the supply chain,” he explained. Saignat noted that AF-KL Cargo also
sometimes uses its dangerous goods product for shipping fashion/luxury sector flammable liquids like perfumes, for example, and its express product for samples or items urgently required for a fashion show. “We also have two
products dedicated to the fashion industry – one is for hanging garments, where we provide customers with dedicated containers in which they can hang the clothes for delivery to destination, and the other is the tailor-made services available through our Cohesion product,” Saignat added.
