We minister to children in underprivileged areas who are at risk for dropping out of school and for gang activity. Most of the children are from Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico; and others are from Vietnam and China. Throughout the year we host children’s Bible clubs in the apartment complexes. We use the NIrV Children’s Bibles for textbooks in our English classes as many are illiterate and English will be the only language they’ll ever learn to read. We really want them to be able to use the Bibles and know the stories, not just give them another book to put on the shelf after learning English. At the beginning of the year we hold up the NirV Children’s Bibles and tell them that when they have completed the year we will reward them by giving them their very own Bible. On the last day of our club we present the Bibles to the children. It’s a big occasion. We have the children seated and then call them up one by one. Upon receiving his Bible, one little boy held it to his
chest and exclaimed,‘Thank you! Now I
have my own Bible!’ We started picking him up on Sundays and taking him to a nearby church. He walked into the Sunday school class and immediately showed his teacher. ‘Look, this is my Bible– and I can read it!’
