Franchise Advice

“an increased availability and access to fi nance will boost investment in franchise opportunities in the next 12 months. The number of enquiries from business owners considering franchising as a growth strategy is at an all- time high”

“These prospective franchisees will be cautious in these diffi cult times, and will want to see a well-structured, professional franchise business before parting with

their franchise fees, or approaching the franchise-supportive banks for funding.” Alan predicts that good, solid businesses will enter the franchise industry, that they will take their advice from experienced franchise professionals and that new recruits will join their networks. “I believe that to be in business in franchising offers a more secure future than being in a business which is not franchised,” he says. Richard Holden, head of franchising for Lloyds TSB Commercial, agrees. He says: “Much uncertainty persists, but nevertheless an increased availability and access to fi nance will boost investment in franchise opportunities in the next 12 months. The number of enquiries from business owners considering franchising as a growth strategy is at an all-time high. It is encouraging to see an upturn in business

confi dence, which adds to hopes that the recovery will be sustainable. Whilst the number of new franchises that launch each year remains encouraging, risk-averse prospective franchisees should focus their research on well-established and proven franchise brands that have stood the test of time.

“A good starting point for investors is

to research brands that have achieved British Franchise Association full- member status. Sectors that have shown some strong growth which are worthy of consideration, and are forecast to see continued growth in 2012 include care services, the sale of second-hand goods, education, fast-food retail and environmental services. Thorough research is essential for any would be franchisee before they make their commitment.” 
