IN FOCUS EGYPT

u and Hurghada from the UK, and a

flying time of four hours, this is simply the quickest and cheapest way for your customers to get a tan this spring!

tourismtalk Khaled Ramy,

Director

Egyptian Office of Tourism “In 2011 we had over one

million visitors to Egypt from the UK, and we expect to improve on this in 2012. The trend in 2011 was for longer stays, with the average going up to 11.8 nights. This reflects the increasing popularity of twin-centre holidays in Egypt. We shall be highlighting this during agents’ road shows we are organising for April and May. “Looking to the future, we shall

soon have a new government, a new president, and an elected parliament for the first time in our history. When a country with the potential of Egypt is held back for some reason, and the obstacle is removed, you can expect double-digit growth in the market.”

Egypt What’s New:

Mövenpick is planning to open its new Resort Abu Soma at the end of 2012. This upscale resort is on the shores of the Red Sea at Soma Bay, 45 km south of Hurghada. Soma Bay is quiet, with golden sandy beaches, and is a good jumping-off point for exploring nearby sea and desert attractions. The 424-room Mövenpick Resort Abu

Soma will offer lots of facilities including a diving centre for those keen to explore the rich corals and marine life of the Red Sea. The resort also offers a miniature golf course, tennis courts, and a wellness complex; while younger guests will enjoy the dedicated Kids’ Club. Roger Kacou, senior vp, Mövenpick

Hotels & Resorts in Africa, said: “Egypt is a strategic growth market for us and the Mövenpick Resort Abu Soma perfectly complements our upscale resort portfolio in the Red Sea, which includes leading properties in El-Gouna, El-Quseir, El-Sokhna, Taba and the newly signed resort in Sharm el Sheikh – scheduled to open in April 2012.”

Best Time To Go: “May is an ideal time to visit. The summers can be

very hot and dry through June-August. In May you are guaranteed bearable heat with blue skies and sunshine.” ZOE BETCHLEY, PRODUCT MANAGER FOR THE MIDDLE EAST, HAYES & JARVIS

Perfect twins: “More travellers are now looking to experience a twin-centre

holiday. Combining beach and culture, Taba Heights and Petra in Jordan is a fantastic blend.” MAYAR ABDEL AZIZ, VP MARKETING FOR ORASCOM DEVELOPMENT

Director, Red Sea Holidays “We will continue our

comprehensive education programme into 2012, giving agents the chance to experience the main Red Sea resorts and our new cruise offerings including Luxor. Our newly expanded range of cruise

and stay options allows clients to combine a Nile cruise with a relaxing stay by the Red Sea, or to experience more of Egypt’s history and culture in Luxor and Cairo. We believe there is no substitute for

experience and local knowledge, which is why our travel advisers regularly visit our resorts and hotels."
