CITY BREAK BERGEN
“Recommend a three-day visit: two days to explore Bergen and a third to take a trip into the stunning fjordland – ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ is the most popular excursion.”
café – serving local pastries, of course – tucked away in Bergen’s back streets. For even better views of the region,
consider hopping on a bus to the base of the Ulriken643 cable car a little beyond the city centre. It transports passengers to 643 metres
above sea level – hence its name – to the peak of the highest of the seven mountains that surround the city. There are a series of scenic trails that begin and end at the peak as well as a café in which to shelter from the strong winds that often batter the summit.
Further afield While two days in Bergen should be adequate to explore the city, it’s worth adding a third in order to discover the spectacular local fjordland or to enjoy a range of activities available as part of locally organised trips and boat tours. Among the most popular options is
the classic ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ day trip (
www.fjordtours.com) which incorporates visits to the Aurlandsfjord and Naeroyfjord by boat and travel on both the Bergen and breathtaking Flam railways.
