IN FOCUS CHANNEL ISLANDS CREAM OF THE CROP
The Channel Islands - Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm - have lovely beaches, beautiful scenery, and great food. They appeal to those who seek peace and quiet on their holidays says Richard Williams
J
ersey is the sunniest place in the British Isles, and with its
close neighbour Guernsey, continues to attract a good share of UK visitors. The main selling points are the short journey, with fl ights and
sailings from many UK regional airports and ports, the sterling currency, and English spoken everywhere.
Being so close to the mainland, the short breaks market is very important and represents the bulk of bookings. A good range of fl ights - including new ones from Oxford and Sothend - plus fast ferries helps support this growth As the next largest of the Channel Islands, Guernsey too relies heavily on the UK short-break market. The average hotel stay is four days, stretching to 7-10 days for self-catering, though people bringing their cars tend to stay longer
and make a more substantial holiday of it, especially in the summer season. Reporting a 1.4% increase in
holidaymakers for the fi rst nine months of 2011 compared with the same period in 2010, Guernsey’s director of Marketing & Tourism, Jason Moriarty, said the travel trade had played a highly signifi cant role in the island’s solid performance, and stressed the importance of continued co-operation in 2012.
In 2012 VisitGuernsey will use the
strapline ‘Rediscover what life’s about’, reinforcing the message that the island is a place to relax, explore at your own pace and re-connect with loved ones. Print advertising of the island will be maintained at 2011 levels, with an increase in digital marketing activity focused primarily at special interest markets such as walkers, foodies and heritage enthusiasts.

David de Carteret, Director of Jersey Tourism “Short breaks of three, four and fi ve nights are now
the main area of business for Jersey. Our restaurants (three with Michelin stars) maintain high standards of food and service and are a tremendous attraction to short-stay visitors looking for a quality experience. UK short break volumes have been encouraging particularly during the autumn, when the ‘Tennerfest´ promotion offers low-priced great food. “We are very fortunate to have such a
range of air services to virtually every area of the UK. Fast ferries from the south coast ports of Weymouth and Poole also provide a journey of only four hours. New routes for 2012 will include an easyJet service from Southend and Manx 2 from Oxford, joining the 30-plus airports from which we have links.
Tap The Potential: “The potential to sell holidays to the
Channel Islands is significantly increased this year. This is due to the timing of Easter and the extended Jubilee bank holiday in June. The Channel Islands are great short-break destinations.” HILARY LEVY, PRODUCT MANAGER, PRESTON TRAVEL GROUP
Woo The Walkers: “Look out for our walking programme in 2012.
We have two fantastic walking festivals in the Spring and the Autumn. We are also now offering the ‘CI Way’, which takes visitors around all of the Channel Islands.” DAVID DE CARTERET, DIRECTOR OF JERSEY TOURISM
