North America

Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan is home to wolf, bison, caribou, black bears, moose, fox and a big pelican colony. The wilderness of Yukon and the Northwest Territories can comfortably be accessed by cruise ship.

MENTION THE MOVIES Alberta’s rugged scenery has made it something of a Mecca for ‘western’ film shoots. The 1994 family drama, Legends of the Fall starring Brad Pitt, used the Rockies area around Ghost River for World War One scenes and historic locations like Gastown, Vancouver. Pitt was back in Alberta in 2005 for

The Assassination of Jesse James. Although ‘set’ in Missouri, it was filmed in southern Alberta’s McKinnon Flats area. Calgary’s grand Fairmont Palliser Hotel was used for the ballroom scene. Cowboy gay love story Brokeback Mountain also used Alberta’s plains and mountains as backdrops, including historic Fort Macleod, a crossroads that once hosted Indian encampments, wagon trails and buffalo grazing grounds. The town was the first western outpost for the North West Mounted Police (Mounties). It’s also home to the Empress Theatre, circa 1912. Point clients to Ranchman’s, a stampede bar in Calgary where other scenes were filmed. Western spoof Shanghai Noon,

starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, is supposedly set in Nevada but film

locations included Wayne, a near-ghost town in the badlands of Alberta near Calgary. These days, only the Rosedeer Hotel and Last Chance Saloon hang on and the residents of the mining town have fallen from 3000 to just 30. Toronto is known as Hollywood

North due to its huge film industry. The city hosts one of the world’s leading film festivals each September and Chicago, X-Men, and Police Academy are just some of the films produced there. A popular location is The Distillery

Historic District, once the largest in the British Empire. These days the complex houses galleries, bars and restaurants. North America’s largest Greektown – in Toronto – was the location for rom-com My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Turn to page 5 to find out how you can WIN cinema tickets!
