DAY 5: CUBA AND THE LAND
Cuban farmers & agrarian life Learn how agricultural reform, organic farming, and soil and water conservation are helping Cuban farmers more effectively manage the country’s natural resources on an excursion into the countryside today. Travel to a cigar factory in rural Pinar del Rio for a demonstration and discussion about producing Cuba’s most famous product. In Viñales, discuss agrarian reform at a tobacco farm; meet community farmers who describe their new agricultural businesses and the challenges of farm life in Cuba; and interact with students and teachers at a rural elementary school. Following a stop for lunch in the Viñales Valley, visit an organic farm to discuss the successes of, and obstacles faced by, Cuba’s ongoing organic farming programs. Return to Havana to experience Cuban entrepreneurism this evening with dinner at a paladar, an example of one of Cuba’s small, privately run restaurants, specializing in nouvelle Cuban cuisine.
