Briggs Equipment has announced it intends to take over from Barloworld as the US's largest dealer of Hyster fork lift trucks.

In a statement, Briggs International, Inc. announced that its subsidiary Briggs Equipment has executed a letter of interest to acquire a portion of Barloworld Handling’s assets. With this acquisition, Hyster Company will appoint Briggs as an authorised dealer for the sales and service of Hyster brand lift trucks in a portion of Barloworld’s territory. Barloworld Handling has accepted Briggs’ letter of interest. Briggs is conducting due diligence of Barloworld’s US materials handling operations.

Once completed, this transaction will position Briggs as one of the largest Hyster dealers in the US, with responsibility for a large portion of the southern United States. Briggs will sell and service Hyster brand lift trucks in Florida, Arkansas and Atlanta, and portions of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Briggs will assume dealer responsibilities in these territories.

Briggs is currently one of the largest dealers of Yale brand lift trucks, with branches servicing Yale products and

customers in portions of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Briggs International subsidiaries also are the Yale dealers for the UK, and the Hyster and Yale dealer for most of Mexico. Both Hyster Company and Yale Materials Handling Corporation are operating divisions of NACCO Materials Handling Group. "Briggs is excited by the potential to expand both its footprint and product offering in the United States with the addition of the Hyster brand," said Dave Bratton, CEO of Sammons Enterprises. "The growth of our materials handing business brings more opportunities to

our employees and better service to our customers. This acquisition provides our customers with more product options and quicker response times." www.briggsequipment.com

Schenker Rail to work on Radlett depot

German-owned rail freight operator DB Schenker Rail has been chosen to work on the controversial plans for a 3.5m sq ft green belt logistics depot in Hertfordshire. The move comes as a final decision on the Helioslough scheme at Radlett moves closer. DB Schenker Rail has been chosen as preferred operator for new rail freight interchanges at two sites, both close to the M25. The interchange at Radlett in Hertfordshire is being promoted by SEGRO, while the interchange at Colnbrook in Berkshire is being promoted by Goodman.

Rail industry forecasts predict growth in container traffic on the UK railway of up to 300% by 2030. In order to meet this demand, DB Schenker Rail believes that significant new terminal capacity is needed, especially close to major consumer markets.

Alain Thauvette, chief executive of DB Schenker Rail UK, said: "To

deliver rail freight growth in the UK we need new terminals. We are delighted to have reached agreements with SEGRO and Goodman to be their preferred operator for these planned interchanges. Both terminals have the potential to take up to 2,000 long-haul lorry movements off the roads every day, reducing both congestion and carbon emissions. The Radlett scheme could see a

development of five units, ranging from 480,000sq ft to 1.2m sq ft. The proposed development will total 3.5m sq ft. There will be 2,652 car parking spaces and 617 lorry parking spaces.

Plans for the development of the airfield site at Radlett have been fiercely opposed by local people for the last 10 years. St Albans Council refused planning permision and following Helioslough’s appeal a planning inquiry was held. A final decision by planning inspectors is expected to be announced within weeks. Helioslough is working on a second large railfreight scheme. Together with partners Shepherd Developments, they have been selected by utilities giant Severn Trent to work on a 7m sq ft logistics park close to Etwall, Derbyshire. Plans for the 620-acre site were originally proposed in 2008 but have encountered stiff opposition from local people.
