ShD is editorially independent, and does not levy a charge for ‘colour separations’. The views expressed in this publication are not necessarily those of the editor or publisher.
ast month, my colleague Rob Fisher and I travelled to the MODEX trade fair in Atlanta. The inaugural show was, on the surface, a great success, with exhibitors pleased by the quantity and quality of the visitors, and deals being tied up across the floor. Whichever way we turned, we couldn’t help notice the high number of automation companies displaying and
demonstrating their wares.
Robotic vehicles and AGVs were roaming freely along and across the aisles – it was a very engaging and dynamic event. The automation companies are doing very well at the moment, as operators of logistics organisations look to maximise every last square metre or cubic metre of warehouse space. It’s called sweating the assets.
The IT companies were also prominent, with innovation and fine-tuning of existing products helping end users drive towards ever-greater accuracy and productivity.
Yes, there were fork lift trucks there and, yes, steel racking played a part. But a visitor arriving at the Georgia Convention Centre was able to view a complete range of products and services that contribute to the efficient operation of a warehouse. Next year, IMHX promises to take this concept further, by embracing the processes and equipment that feed into and out of the warehouse. That’s why IMHX 2013 is being billed as a show for the intralogistics industry. ‘Intralogistics’ is a word that was coined only relatively
recently. The ‘intra-’ prefix denotes ‘within’, so the word covers everything that goes on in the world of logistics. In the past, ShD has been mistakenly called a fork lift truck magazine, and while that aspect of the industry remains at the heart of our publication, it is about the entire logistics industry.
To reflect this, we have taken the decision to ditch the current format and go for a revamp. From next month’s edition, there will be a new look and a significant shift in its editorial content.
It’ll still be the same ShD we know and – I hope – love, but with many exciting enhancements. We have a stronger, larger team, a new owner who’s delivered on its promise to invest in the ShD brand, and this will be reflected in more comprehensive coverage of the industry with more exclusive material. Until then, I wish you well. ShD is dead – long live
