Cognex Corporation has launched the DataMan 300 barcode reader, which is suitable for high-speed logistics applications such as tote scanning, label print and apply verification, as well as carton code reading.

he new DataMan 300 is a complement to the powerful DataMan 500 reader which Cognex says has proved itself throughout its introductory year in the logistics, retail fulfilment and distribution markets.
“We saw an industry that has been relying on laser technology and knew that we could offer a better, yet affordable, image-based solution for high speed logistics applications,” says Carl Gerst, vice president and business unit manager, ID products. “The DataMan 500 reads 1D or 2D codes presented in any direction at high speeds for postal, parcel and package sortation as well as presentation scanning. The DataMan 300 is now available to take on fixed 1D code reading for high speed tote scanning and print and apply lines.” The DataMan product line of barcode scanners can provide consistently higher read rates than laser
scanners, says Cognex. With this new release, the Cognex algorithm,

barcodes used in the logistics industry. Hotbars uses texture to locate barcodes at any orientation, and then extracts high-resolution 1D signals for decoding. Cognex says Hotbars combines superior signal fidelity with lightning speed, giving this next generation of DataMan readers unprecedented performance. Camera-based barcode readers can help the logistics industry achieve: • Higher read rates that can reduce costs and increase throughput;
• Visualisation to access data for continuous process improvement;
• Lower equipment costs, because imagers have no moving parts;
• Future proofing, as 2D matrix codes are becoming more prevalent through all industries.
The DataMan 300 is available now. ●

Video troubleshooting goes live Knapp has launched a video-based troubleshooting service for its customers. Available as an addition to any service contract, Knapp’s KiSoft Web Eye allows live, bi- directional video and voice transmission to identify and resolve service issues at the customer’s site. Wearing the fully mobile kit, a client employee or a Knapp engineer can transmit live images and sound from the actual location of any problem to Knapp’s customer service experts at the company’s headquarters in Graz, Austria. This 24-hour service uses WLAN technology to connect with the customer network and allows hand-drawn sketches, videos or instructions to be sent quickly and easily, directly to the operator’s display on site.
Comments Ebb Kretschmer, head of customer services for Knapp UK: “KiSoft Web Eye is a really clever piece of kit that results in clearer communication of service problems and, consequently, much faster resolution of any issues. As well as being used for real-time scenarios, the equipment can also be used for long-term monitoring. With the record function, users can perform time-delayed analyses that help to pinpoint trouble spots.” ●
