Sclerosis Center, the first of its kind in the region. AUBMC sets the stage with four Centers of Excellence: Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon Abu-Haidar Neuroscience Institute Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute Multiple Sclerosis Center A major strategic focus area is
cardiovascular disease, which is a rapidly growing health issue in the region. A Heart and Vascular COE will be established at AUBMC in the coming years.
ExcEllEncE in Education and training As a regional leader in higher medical education, the Faculty of Medicine continues to advance through curriculum restructuring to reflect the changing needs in healthcare provision, advancement through the active pursuit of international accreditations (including ACGME), creation of new academic programmes, and training and education to healthcare providers through Continuing Medical Education (CME) and External Medical Affairs (EMA) offices. The CME office, in joint sponsorship with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation,
provides credits and accreditation for physicians, nurses and HCPs. The Clinical and Professional Development Center, accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, is a provider of continuing nursing education. Healthcare providers in the region can now attend educational workshops in Lebanon and gain AMA or ANCC credits. This places AUBMC in a role to serve the medical educational needs of physicians, nurses and pharmacists in Lebanon and the region. The Middle East Medical Assembly (MEMA) is one such activity. Through its External Medical Affairs
office, AUBMC has developed strategic partnerships with multiple healthcare institutions in Lebanon, the region, and beyond. The goal is improving quality care to our societies and patient access to the high standards of care at AUBMC, upgrading the quality of medical education, and enhancing research activities.
lEadErship in innovativE rEsEarch AUB and the Faculty of Medicine are committed to a leadership role in clinical research and have created the Clinical
Research Institute (CRI), Human Resource Protection Programme, and the Office of Research Education. AUBMC will be at the forefront of ensuring the ethical treatment of human research participants aligned with the highest standards. Additional initiatives such as the Salim
El-Hoss Bioethics and Professionalism Programme, the Global Health Programme, Arab Regional Center for Research (WHO), Training and Policy Making in Mental Health, will also bring AUBMC closer to attaining its 2020 vision of regional leadership and competition with the best academic medical centres in the West.
dEvElopmEnt and implEmEntation of thE nEw auBmc
2020 mEdical
complEx Plans are underway for the new AUBMC 2020 Medical Complex, which involves a major expansion of the medical centre from a 350-bed capacity, to a 600-bed capacity institution, the creation of new patient towers, the expansion of existing services, and the creation of specialized centres of excellence, to name a few. ■
