President’s Message

Change is Central. I am reminded constantly of how well this defining motto fits Central State University. This issue of Marauder Magazine has a few recent reminders:

• We started the 2011-2012 academic year with a reorganized academic structure that includes a new College of Science and Engineering. This reflects our interest in attracting and graduating more students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

• We established a new University College to better serve and retain new, first-time freshmen and transfer students.

John W. Garland, President, CSU

• We opened two new residence halls, both of which house academic high achievers. One is named in honor of another high achiever: CSU alumnus and longtime Central State administrator Harry G. Johns.

• We increased overall enrollment this fall by 9.4 percent, by far the largest increase among Ohio’s public institutions of higher education.

• Central State’s Fine and Performing Arts Department was recently designated an Ohio Center of Excellence in Cultural and Societal Transformation. This is the second Center of Excellence designation for CSU. The first designation recognized our Manufacturing Engineering and Environmental Engineering programs and our National Environmental Technology Incubator as a combined Center of Excellence in Emerging Technologies.

Next year is a landmark year for Central State University as we celebrate our 125th anniversary. Though much has changed since we were founded in 1887 the hallmark of a Central State education has remained the same: we change lives and prepare students for leadership and service. I have witnessed the transformative effect Central State has on our students year after year on our faculty, staff, and our alumni. I include my wife, Carolyn, in the ranks of those who have truly benefitted from the Central State University experience.

As you know, I am retiring from the Presidency of my alma mater at the

end of June 2012. It’s been a truly rewarding and transformative experience for both Carolyn and me. We will be leaving the Presidency behind but not Central State University. Carolyn and I intend to remain active in supporting our alma mater. I hope you will join us in supporting Central State, an institution that has educated and nurtured thousands of young women and men and continues to change the lives of our communities and society.

I wish you many blessings, peace, and prosperity in the coming year.
