CSU admissions officer honored as a 2011 YMCA Achiever
“Strengthening the community by
strengthening lives” is the motto of the YMCA. It is the focus of the YMCA Black and Latino Achievers program, one student and one volunteer at a time. The Black and Latino Achievers program is one of the region’s larg- est programs of its kind, partnering with area organizations and adult role models to inspire and encourage teens of color to pursue post-graduate work, establish careers, and give back to a community that helped guide them on their journeys. This year the group recognized Wanda Colon-Canales, a senior admission/diversity officer at Central State University.
Chorus travels to China The Central State University (CSU) Chorus is a world-renowned
group known for its skilled and diverse musical performances. The group travels extensively, both domestically and abroad. Most recently, the CSU Chorus served as American ambassadors in Germany and Austria in 2010 in anticipation of the World Choir Olympics in 2012.
Every spring, the chorus goes on an annual tour, and this year’s tour
will be particularly memorable. Professor William Henry Caldwell, Chair of the Fine and Performing Arts Department and Conductor of the CSU Chorus, will be traveling to China with 25 of the University’s top choral students.
Professor Caldwell has been a member of the CSU faculty since 1979, and this visit to China marks his fourth trip abroad with the chorus. Caldwell remarked that music students do not have the opportunity to study much about Chinese music, and yet, some of the most superb classical musicians are Chinese. “It’ll be an adventure [China]! This will be a place where I know we will be greatly appreciated,” Caldwell exclaimed.
While in China the students will serve as ambassadors for the
University’s efforts to continue building a partnership with TEDA Polytechnic Institute in Tianjin, China. TEDA Polytechnic is a three- year technical college near Tianjin, China. CSU and TEDA signed a partnership agreement earlier this year to launch a student exchange program.

CSU recognized by Washington Monthly magazine
Washington Monthly College Guide and Rankings magazine places Central State University (CSU) as 48th among all national baccalaureate colleges and fifth in Ohio for contributing to the public good.
The monthly publication rates schools based on their social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting- edge scholarships and PhDs), and service (encouraging students to give back to their country). The total list includes 310 baccalaureate schools.
During the trip, students will be immersed in Chinese culture by touring famous landmarks, such as The Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, Lingering Garden of Suzhou, and Huangpu River. Senior Courtney Dortch, a native of Dayton, Ohio remarked, “This is a once-in- a-lifetime experience, and I can’t believe I’m a part of it.”
Traveling with the chorus will be the University’s Provost, Dr. Juliette B. Bell. The tour begins March 16, 2012 and concludes March 25th.
