The NASUWT was deeply saddened at the sudden and untimely death last month of Moyra Healy, the behaviour management expert who offered inspirational support to thousands of the Union’s newly qualified teacher members.



Ms Healy was a familiar face at the NASUWT’s regular seminars and events for newly qualified teachers, with members clamouring to attend her insightful workshops, which unlocked the secrets of successful behaviour management.



Her knowledge was gained during a teaching career spanning more than 30 years, part of which was spent teaching some of the most challenging children in Birmingham at the Zacchaeus Centre.



Never one to give up on a child, no matter how difficult their behaviour, Ms Healy encouraged new teachers to see their classrooms as havens of safety and structure for their pupils where all students were capable of success.



The success of her approach to ‘hooking’ pupils into behaving well in class led to her being commissioned as an adviser on behaviour to the then Department for Education and Skills (DfES). However, she never lost her enthusiasm for the classroom, regularly describing teaching as ‘the best job in the world’.



Her enduring popularity with NASUWT members was not just down to the effectiveness of her behaviour management advice but also her approachability and empathy with teachers who were experiencing difficulties or frustrations in their school.



Her warm sense of humour, combined with the fact that she never forgot a face or name of a delegate, helped to keep NASUWT members returning to Union events to hear more of her wisdom.
