NASUWT members continue ‘standing up for standards’
The ‘quiet revolution’ to reclaim the classroom is achieving real progress, with teachers flocking to join the NASUWT to enable them to be part of the action to make a stand against excessive workload, adverse changes to pay and working conditions, and job insecurity.
Members across the UK have been reporting the positive difference the action short of strike action to enforce contractual rights and entitlements and secure working conditions to help them raise standards is making in their schools.
A number of members have reported receiving positive support from their headteachers, who recognise that the dispute is with the Government and not with individual schools and employers.

YOUR VIEWS
“The amount of classroom observation to which we were subjected in my school was affecting my health. The NASUWT action limiting classroom observation has made a positive difference. We have moved to quality of observations, not quantity.”
“As a result of the action, we now for the first time have an agreed school calendar and ad hoc last-minute meetings have been stopped. For the first time, I am starting to feel like I am getting a better work/life balance.”
“I hadn’t realised how I had lost control over my PPA time, and wasn’t able to use it in a way that helped me to manage my workload. The NASUWT action has been a great opportunity to remind the school that this is my time to use as I see fit to support high-quality teaching and learning.”
“Before the action, we were being asked to mark all literacy and numeracy books every day and to do detailed annotations on every lesson plan. The action has led to this policy being workload-impact assessed and resulted in major changes that reduce workload and respect our professionalism as teachers.”
“The NASUWT action has given me a way of standing up against the awful attacks on me and other teachers, while at the same time standing up for standards.”
“I had forgotten how lucky we were in Scotland to have a limit on working hours. The NASUWT action has reminded teachers as well as schools, and is making a real difference.”
“My school had never really taken seriously that teachers should not be covering for absence. It has made a real difference to my workload, no longer having my time eaten away by covering.”
