“CISPI worked very hard to make this green claim in a transparent fashion by following two important components: first, they made qualified environmental claims tied to a specific benefit for this single attribute, and second, they chose a certifying organization to validate their claim that is financially independent of their industry.”
The cast iron pipes and fittings, manufactured in the United States, are made of 96 to 98 percent recycled content, which means the CISPI members avoid the energy consumption and emissions related to mining, transportation, and the processing of ore to make virgin pipe. “We use recycled materials; our industry is one of the largest purchasers of scrap metal in the United States. We typically buy a mixture of cast scrap iron, which may include engine blocks, manhole covers and some shredded steel,” said LeVan.
Additionally, along with their VARs, all three manufacturers have been recognized by the ICC-ES PMG Listing Program. “CISPI came to us at the beginning of the process to certify cast iron pipes and fittings under our SAVE Program, and we realized we could also offer them recognition under our PMG Listing Program,” said Shahin Moinian, P.E., Executive Director of the ICC-ES PMG Certification Programs. “As a result, all three manufacturers received recognition for hub less pipes and fittings, and hub and spigot pipes and fittings, as complying with the International Plumbing Code®, the International Residential Code® and the Uniform Plumbing Code. The products were also certified to CISPI 301, one of the Institute’s standards.”
