In the past month of sailing


between Sydney and Brisbane, hellos and goodbyes have added so quickly that it seems a blur. Hello and nice to meet you to the Burke family from Whidbey Island that bought a sailboat in Sydney to start cruising. And then goodbye to the many friends at Cammeray Marina that we so enjoyed. Hello again to friends on Ceilydh from Vancouver, who helped cast off our lines in La Cruz Mexico and then caught them as we arrived in Brisbane. And hello again to our new neighbor in Brisbane, the south African/French family aboard Merlin that we last saw in New Caledonia. We have endless friends and vivid


memories, though not because of the salt air or sea, but because of living in the margin between the lifestyle we knew and the vast emptiness that is to seaward. We celebrate after a long passage, or managing tricky navigation, or seeing the sun rise after windy night. We celebrate birthdays on the beach and because a weekly supply ship brought fresh produce to those craving food that doesn’t require a can opener. We celebrate because it’s


fun and healthy and reminds us that friendship and community are easier without walls and fences. We learned this all because of a


Sunday morning gin fizz, along a wharf over two decades ago. Strangers aren’t really so strange if you can share a little time together. And now goodbye to
