Renew Your PHRF-NW Membership NOW! It’s the start of a new year of sailboat racing, and also

time to renew your membership in PHRF-NW. It’s easy to do, and can be done online from the comfort of your home at
www.PHRF-NW.org It’s certainly one of the most inexpensive pieces of “equipment” on your boat. And as a reminder, having a current, valid PHRF-NW rating certificate is required for entry into virtually all of the racing events that take place in the Pacific Northwest. I mention this last bit because we have noted a small number of boats entering and participating in regattas that are not current members of PHRF-NW, and occasionally the handicap rating of one of these boats has been incorrectly stated. In one case it was substantially slower than it should have been! And, at least once last year, (2011) one of these boats was declared the winner of its division in a local regatta. Technically, not being a current member of PHRF is grounds for disqualification. Just think how the crew would feel if their “win” for a day, or a weekend of hard racing, got turned into a DSQ because the owner failed to renew his membership in PHRF-NW! Not to mention how other competitors would feel if a yacht’s “win” was found to be based on an incorrect rating! So, if you haven’t already done so, renew your membership in PHRF-NW NOW! It’s easy. It’s painless. It only takes a couple of mouse-clicks to accomplish — and it’s the right thing to do!
David Lynch President, PHRF-NW
Looks like clubs might be checking a bit closer this year. So far we know of one race where results were changed because some boats weren’t current on their PHRF membership.

Support local and regional programs for children and young adults through the charitable donation of your boat. The Pacific Marine foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization funding regional programs such as Northwest Youth Services, Sea Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs, and local public school education foundations. A substantial tax savings and the possibility of a partial cash sale makes a charitable donation a very attractive alternative for any owner who is considering selling their power or sailing yacht.

48° NORTH, FEBRUARY 2012 PAGE 14 The weather is a great teacher! Inexperienced sailors
grumble about the weather and are impatient for it to improve. Perhaps they are most challenged in either end of the spectrum – no wind or storms. Seasoned sailors accept the weather just as it is, and then embrace it and deal with it.
The weather is a metaphor for all the circumstances in life, both the ones we like and the ones we don’t. We are generally aware of the absurdity of trying to control the weather, but we don’t necessarily apply it to life. Both the harsh and the pleasant realities of life become much sweeter, and we become much more effective, when we make the shift from trying to control the circumstances of our lives to (1) accepting and embracing the reality that is, and then (2) dancing with it. — Capt’n Howard
