Used My Heater as an Engine Cooler Hey Jack, I enjoyed your article in the January 2012,

issue of 48° North, “What’s the Best Heating System for Your Boat,” and I learned a few things. I have a Webasto hydronic system in my 39’ cutter which I am very happy with. A few years ago an incident occurred that made me fall in love with it.

During a boring, no-wind transit from Port Townsend to Friday harbor I was a bit too close to Smith Island at the height of the flood when the diesel engine overheat alarm went off. I shut it down and in what seemed like moments I was in the kelp in 12’ feet of water. This was no place to remove/replace the raw water impeller. I was about to drop the hook when I remembered my Webasto system, which is nothing more than a heat exchanging system. I set the heating system to “engine heat”, turned up the thermostat and turned every register on to high. I restarted the Yanmar and the overheat alarm was off and stayed off. I motored away from Smith Island and checked the engine. It seemed to be running a bit cool so I turned off three of the five registers and the engine came up to what seemed a normal operating temperature. I replaced the raw water impeller at my leisure at Friday Harbor and toasted with an ice cold beer the wonderful decision of my boat’s previous owner to install a Wabasto hydronic heating system.

Since then I have used the Webasto system for

emergency engine cooling one other time. Just after entering Okisolo Rapids the raw water pump began screaming (I had replaced the impeller before heading north). No panic, no excitement as I immediately turned on the Wabasto engine heat and pressed on through. This time it was a piece of kelp that had blocked the intake and in my book, once an impeller screams, it must be replaced no matter how new it is. But it was replaced hours later at the dock at Blind Channel. Another ice cold beer. Another toast. No emergency. I love my Webasto.

Cheers, Scott R.
