the Bahamas, Caribbean, Panama, and, if all is going well, across the South Pacific; maybe further, who knows. Just a little bit about us: Jennie and I are under 30,
hard working (a polite way to say not trust fund kids), and sensible, and we’re bringing our dog Dexter. We sailed a Catalina 30 which I had moored at Mosquito Creek in North Vancouver (our hometown) for a bit. We just recently purchased a 36- foot Union Cutter in Northern Florida. Cypraea is her name, and she seemed to fit the bill for a bluewater cruiser. We’re going to drive down next month and start our cruising life. Anyway, I digress, but have a look. Our plan is to use the website to provide hope and entertainment to others with the dream, as people before had provided us, and maybe make a little cash through it too (every little bit helps).
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

D/L Ratio should be in Pounds, Not Long Tons I got a call from a reader having problems with the formulas in the January issue (“Boat Dimensions”). Upon checking on it, there is a missing number in the formula for the D/L ratio. The formula should be: D/L = Displ : 2240 (0.01xLWL)3
but was published as D/L = Displacement (0.01xLWL)3
If you look at the beginning of the article I indicated displacement was in pounds, since most of the spec sheets show it this way. But the formula that got printed assumes the displacement is in long tons. Therefore, the formula should have been shown with the displacement (in pounds divided by 2240 to put it in terms of long tons.

Sorry Mike. When I was double checking the ratios, all the ratios we found had the formula without the divided by 2240. I assumed that was the correct one, and you know what happens when you assume, that’s on me. So, to keep it clear, when working in pounds, use the displacement divided by 2240 formula.
