Toyota Training – making a difference

Toyota’s focus on operator training is reflected in the training+ packages. Toyota focuses on the benefits of utilising its products to gain maximum productivity and minimise damage. To take this to the next stage, Toyota is developing a world first forklift simulator capable of identifying poor habits and improving driving techniques without moving a wheel. The simulator offers massive opportunity to increase awareness and is expected to be launched later this year.

Imagine a situation where an operator can be assessed in their own environment with software programmed to focus on individual site conditions.

costs and damage to goods. Helping raise awareness of good operator driving techniques will underline everything the Toyota brand stands for in terms of safety in the workplace." Operator error remains the biggest influence on injury statistics and damage costs. Businesses who embrace good operator practice endorsed by good supervision and appropriate training repeatedly see increased productivity and reduced costs.

Wallis continues: “We strive to offer differentiated training courses and specialist advice – but until legislation for operators is taken to a new level, we are all exposed. We must remember that every day a person is sitting in a forklift they are operating equipment that can cause serious damage, injury or, in extreme circumstances, death.”

Further courses aimed at safety and driving down costs supplement its product training include the manual handling course. Available for all employees, it is designed to increase awareness and give practical advice on manual handling.

In addition, Toyota is offering a free Manual Handling Guide, providing advice on the safest ways to lift, stack and move items, simple rules, recommended weight guidelines and advice on equipment to reduce manual handling. If every business used the guide, reviewed their activity and focused on manual handling as lost revenue, businesses could save thousands of pounds per year in reduced absence, workplace injury and protect their workers.

Process – driving a culture of safety through people and process The third link on Taking Care with Toyota is process management.

Providing safe trucks and training is a good foundation to improving safety, but one of the main challenges is how to sustain high safety levels. Toyota has tools at its disposal to help companies create a culture of safety.

One of these tools is Pride in Performance,

providing advice to improve operations and reduce damage through best

practice, by encouraging supervisors to continually monitor performance and recognise achievement. Toyota has also worked with hundreds of managers over the last year demonstrating the benefits of the Toyota Production System (TPS). TPS influences every aspect of Toyota’s organisation. It entrusts employees with well-defined responsibilities and encourages every team member to strive for overall improvement. Kaizen, a pillar of the Toyota culture, promotes tools like 5S (Sift, Sort, Sweep, Spic-and- Span, Sustain) which encourage all members to take care of their work environment, helping to improve efficiency and create a safer workspace. These tools create a culture of safety by involving all members in improving quality and safety and providing visual reminders. Toyota is also launching a web-based programme and a road map to share how TPS can help any business reduce waste and add value critical to business success in the current economic climate.

Taking Care with Toyota Throughout 2012 Toyota will be developing a series of resources to promote safety in the workplace. The manual handling guide and Pride in Performance CD are already available upon request via the Toyota website. Resources will also be available at regional health and safety shows. ● www.toyota-forklifts.co.uk
