At the start of 2012 Toyota Material Handling UK launched ‘Taking Care with Toyota’, a campaign designed to help companies improve safety in the workplace. Toyota will be releasing resources and attending events to promote safer working and help reduce accidents in the workplace. The programme is focused on three key areas - product, people and process.

Toyota 2012 – improving safety in the workplace

T

ony Wallis, operations director, comments: “Toyota has always positioned itself as a provider of safe products and services, but we believe

promoting safety in the workplace goes beyond providing the safest trucks. It also requires that we demonstrate the benefits of training and putting processes in place to create a culture of safety. “In the challenging economic climate," he adds, "it has become more important for companies to focus on safety, not only to protect their workers, but also to reduce costs relating to injury and damage. As a leader in the industry, we are committed to offering as much support as we can. Improving safety is often viewed as a bureaucratic, time- consuming and expensive process, but we believe that by focusing on three areas, companies can improve safety in the workplace whilst improving efficiency and reducing costs.”

Products – safer by design As a global supplier of materials handling equipment, Toyota has a strong track record in safety, focusing on reducing accidents and damage in the workplace, leading to a reduction in costs. Toyota passionately believes that safety is a key driver in the material handling operation of any business. The Toyota range of forklifts and warehouse equipment are safer by design. The product range features unique innovations and design features supporting safe operation including: Toyota’s System of Active

Stability (SAS); BT Reflex reach truck tilting cab; and BT Pro Lifter hand pallet truck.

Unique to Toyota forklifts, SAS constantly monitors forklift operations and automatically takes corrective action when it senses factors that could lead to truck or load instability. This helps protect the operator and load, leading to less damage. The BT Reflex tilting cab helps to reduce operator neck strain, thus increasing productivity, and the BT Pro Lifter hand pallet trucks require up to 67% less starting effort than an ordinary hand pallet truck, reducing the risk of operator strain.

In 2011, Toyota’s ongoing

commitment to help reduce accidents, damage and drive down costs in the workplace led to Toyota becoming the first materials handling equipment manufacturer to fit shock sensors as standard to its range of reach trucks. Shocks allow any impact to trucks to be monitored, recorded and linked to drivers – leading to cost savings and increased safety onsite.

People – delivering safety in the workplace

A cliché, but it's as true today as ever - people are the most important asset in any business. The fact is, they are also one of the greatest costs. Wallis comments: “At Toyota, we encourage customers to focus on operational
