Clean start

Fresh possibility. Tat’s the promise of each day—not just each year—and yet most of the time I coast along with the same old habits, like

What inspires me

Simple, light, tasty … dinner doesn’t get any better than the Udon Bowl with Spinach and Tofu (page 31).

Another reason not to stop at

Starbucks: Natural energy-boosting supps (page 43) can keep me

peppy this winter. Double duty:

Dark leafy greens, daikon, and broccoli detox my body and my skin (page 47).

eating nut- and seed-enhanced oatmeal every morning and exercising mostly at lunchtime. Why alter a pretty-good routine? Well, for starters, our inner and outer circumstances change;

what was a healthy choice one month may be unnecessary, or even somewhat detrimental, the next. For example, I recently discovered that the hearty meals that were so appealing during the fall might not be as supportive to my needs now (especially after all of those too-good-to-resist holiday indulgences!). Eating lighter dishes, such as those in this month’s “Low-cal Dinners” (page 25) and “New Noodle Bowls” (page 30), actually helps me sleep better and have more energy in the morning. What’s more, I might be overlooking a key component to sustainable wellness. A few years ago, I wasn’t as aware of the intricate connection between my hormones and my weight. But new research points to the important role hormones play in weight loss and weight management, affecting bodily functions ranging from hunger cues to the ability to process various sugars. Our feature story, “Te Hormone-Balance Diet” (page 37), explores emerging research in this exciting new approach to eating well. Join me in welcoming this yearly reminder to stop, assess,

and hit the reset button. I wish you the best of luck and good health in 2012.
