f you are a woman who loves the fun, friendship, and challenge of golf, then Big Canoe has just the group for you—the Women’s Golf Association. The WGA is the only formal women’s golf group in Big Canoe. We currently have 144 members comprised of both 9-hole and 18-hole golfers. The regularly scheduled golf day (or playday) is held on Monday mornings. Participants sign up in advance to play, and each Monday a different golf format is held.

flighted, and flight place winners receive a small monetary prize. Our formal season of golf is held from April through October. The WGA is an organization led by a board of ten women. Both 9-hole and 18-hole players are represented. Monthly board meetings, as well as several membership meetings, are also held during our season. We have written bylaws, a constitution, and a set of formal rules and regulations which guide our Monday playdays. Additionally, each member is allowed to vote on any changes the board presents to the membership. A small annual membership fee is charged, and then each golfer is responsible for her golf fees each week she plays. Our major tournaments are the Club Championship, Lillian’s, and the Ringer Tournament. There is a season long Team Match Play Tournament for 18-holers and the 9-holers play the annual ACES and 9 Tournament. Other key events include the annual MGA vs. WGA, Queen of the Mountain (bragging rights for the Big Canoe WGA vs. the Bent Tree women), Opening and Closing Day scrambles, our “Beat the Pro” day, Member-Member tournament, and the “Shoot-out”. Two of our most popular and meaningful events are Rally for the Cure and DIVA Day. The WGA most recently raised $4,400 for Rally for the Cure. DIVA Day is a fun day where we decorate our carts, dress up, and the event is sponsored by Callaway Golf. Couples tournaments and Friday mixers are held throughout the season as well. For women who like match play competition, the Big Canoe Interclub Team plays a full schedule of home and away events with nine other golf clubs. Additionally, the last two years the WGA has held a Guest Day Tournament, with golfers from all over Georgia in attendance. The BCWGA motto is “Have Fun; Play Fast;
Play Fair”. Therefore, at the end of the season the Big Canoe Cup will be given to the one player who participates in the most events, earns the highest number of points, and wins the head-to-head playoff. This trophy represents our hope for the “all around player” who models our motto. Additionally, players are always recognized for birdies, pars, and eagles. Lastly, the WGA is certainly golf at its best, but it is also more than that. Lifelong friendships are formed, support systems are built, and additional golf outings are generated by the connections made in our membership. The WGA is a great way to meet other women who share the love of the game played in the beautiful mountains of Big Canoe.
