An exciting year ahead for the Big Canoe Men’s Golf Association

he NFL, the Ryder Cup, and the FedEx Cup…what do these icons have in common with Big Canoe’s Men’s Golf Association? These are just some of the 12 exciting tournaments that the MGA hosts each year for its members. The MGA is comprised of more than 200 fun-loving guys who really enjoy the game of golf. Our golfing abilities range from novice to experienced, but the common denominator is that we all enjoy participating in the season’s tournaments. While the tournaments are certainly terrific in Big Canoe, what really makes the MGA tick is the friendly competition and camaraderie that the members enjoy. The tournament formats are appealing to all handicap
levels. Even our Club Championship is flighted to accommodate all skill levels and assure fair play. We offer scramble format tournaments like the Opening Day Event and the Red Tee Open. We have two match play events, as well as individual events such as the Club and MGA Championships, and the Replay Tournament. In addition, we have unique and enjoyable tournaments, such as the 19 Man Shootout, our closing day NFL Draft Party, and our 2-day, 36 hole tournament. Most tournaments have a social component, with either breakfast or lunch included in the cost of the event. The highlight of each season is the 3-day, Member Guest Tournament held in early June. It is a first class event with a practice round and 45 holes of golf, a Thursday Shrimp fest that includes several Skills Contests, an event for the ladies on Friday, and culminates in Saturday’s Champions Dinner Dance, complete with a sophisticated silent auction.
The MGA season opens on February 25, 2012 with the Red Tee Open, and concludes with our
2-day, 45 hole Ryder Cup competition in October. To encourage participation in the nine months of tournaments, we have a season-long competition to become one of the 30 players eligible to make one of two Ryder Cup teams. MGA members accumulate points for entering each tournament, with additional points awarded to those who play well. After the closing NFL Tournament, the fifteen top point achievers in each group are selected to play in that season’s Ryder Cup Tournament. Initiated in 2011, The Big Canoe Cup is patterned after the PGA’s FedEx Cup and recognizes year-long excellent play. The Cup rewards the top point achiever in the two Ryder Cup divisions. These two men then face off in the final match of our Ryder Cup Tournament for the honors of having their name inscribed on the Big Canoe Cup, which is displayed in the Clubhouse for all to see! The MGA hosts two social events which are open to every member, even if you don’t play in any tournament. These include the Opening Day Pairings Party and the season’s ending social to which members may bring a guest.
Whether you compete in just one tournament or wish to challenge for the Ryder Cup team and Big Canoe Cup, I know you will have a great experience and make new friends by joining the MGA. Hope to see you out on the course in 2012!
