FEBRUARY 2012 Te ‘Aces’- Big Canoe’s nine hole golf group

For those who enjoy playing just nine holes ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY ALAN BESKE

T

he Aces golf group is open to all Big Canoe men who enjoy playing nine holes of social golf. Our interest is in having a good time on the course

in a low pressure atmosphere. Players may be full-time or part-time residents or guests and participate on the days they want to play. The group plays Wednesday mornings April through October and Wednesday afternoons November through March. Our retired, semi- retired, and actively employed guys find that a nine hole round fits nicely into their schedules. While some people are able to play regularly and others only occasionally, everyone enjoys the fellowship of any round with the Aces. Members of other Big Canoe golf groups are welcome to get out with the Aces any time they want to take a break from their normal eighteen hole routines. We normally play scramble formats to

best accommodate our range of skill levels. Participants contribute one dollar on the days they play, and the pot is distributed to the winning team. Optional closest-to-the-pin contests, with a one dollar entry fee, are held most weeks. The Aces group operates on a user friendly

basis. A formal handicap is not required and you do not need to be a member of the golf amenity or the MGA. The new Non-Peak golf membership, which allows for play anytime on Wednesdays, works well for some of our players who do not play frequently enough to fully utilize the standard membership. Whether you are a beginner, mediocre,

average, or skilled player, you will fit in perfectly with the Aces if you like to play golf and appreciate friendly competition on our beautiful course. New players are always welcome. There are no dues or initiation fees. You play on the days you want to play. Simply sign up, show up, and have fun—that’s all there is to it! Feel free to try a round with the Aces to see if our group is right for you. If you are interested, please contact Alan Beske at (706) 268-3597 or abeske@tds.net.

T

he Big Canoe Golf Committee serves at the pleasure of the General Manager. Its mission is to enhance the golfing experience for all who play golf at

Big Canoe. Its purpose is to act as an advisory Committee to the Big Canoe General Manager and through that office to the Big Canoe POA Directors. It is a resource to the General Manager and the Board for study, comments, and recommendations regarding issues involving golf at Big Canoe. The Golf Committee also acts to promote and support the play of golf for Big Canoe Property Owners, and to represent the best interest of the golfing community and all Property Owners on all matters coming before the Committee. The Committee consists of ten Property Owners, one of whom serves as chairperson chosen by the General Manager. The members are selected by the chairperson from the golfing community to ensure that all constituencies are represented. Included on the Committee are the following: 1) BIG CANOE PROPERTY OWNER MEMBERS: Men’s Golf Association President, Women’s Golf Association Co-Presidents (Nine Hole Golfers and Eighteen Hole Golfers), Handicap Committee Chairman, and six other at large members representing large golfing groups who play together regularly 2) BIG CANOE EMPLOYEES: Director of Golf, Golf Course Superintendent, and Pro Shop Golf Professionals. Property Owner members of this Committee must be in good standing with the Big Canoe Property Owners Association. They should have an interest in Big Canoe, and the golf operations in particular, and be able to commit the time to serve effectively on this Committee. The chairperson is appointed annually for a one year

term by the General Manager. The chairperson may be appointed for consecutive years, but in no event more than three. Committee members are appointed for three year terms beginning January 1st of each year. Each term runs on a calendar basis to coincide with the golf year. The MGA President and the WGA Co-Presidents, along with the Handicap Chairperson, serve for the period that they hold the position. Should a member resign at any time, a replacement will be selected by the chairperson to fill out the duration of that person’s term. The Committee meets once a month. Minutes

are kept for each meeting with copies provided to all Committee members and the General Manager. The minutes are also posted on the POA website. The Committee seeks input from the membership on any and all issues, and is expected to respond to all membership input. The Committee is also responsible to ensure that the golfing community of Big Canoe is kept informed of the Committee activities. Committee members report to the Chairperson, who in turn reports to the General Manager. The Golf Committee is advisory only, and has no authority to incur expenses on behalf of the Association or to obligate the Association in any way.
