FORE! • SMOKE SIGNALS ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT Te Regulars battle in Big Canoe “In addition

to the normal game, there is usually some form of team game played one day of

the last week of the month during the

April-October golf season. A shotgun start with a lunch

following the round was

initiated in 2010.”

BY GLENN MANNING T

he Regulars play every Tuesday and Thursday of the year weather permitting (there are very few play days when no one plays, unless the course is closed).

The Regulars are a hearty group of dedicated players. Handicaps range from about 5-30, with the average being about 16. The group was formed in the mid 90’s by Tom Faucette and Jim Tanner. Three of the original players still participate most of the year. The Regulars have an organized leadership

team. For 2012, it is Ken Rife, Buddy Williams, and Barry Kaufman. There are approximately 65 members included on the distribution list. E-mail is used as the primary communication method. Scheduling is done each Saturday for the next week by the monthly “Cat Herder,” who volunteers for this duty.

As a recognized group, the Regulars have reserved tee times each week. From March to November, the first tee time is usually scheduled for 30 minutes after the first tee time of the day. In December, January, and February, it is common to have a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. unless there is a frost delay. The normal game is a modified Stableford point

system. Points are earned by making bogey or better, and are applied against a standard of two points for par on each hole. Handicaps are utilized to determine the number of points that must be

“made” (36 less handicap) in order to be eligible to participate in any winnings. Those making their points contribute less than those “not making their points”.

In addition to the normal game, there is usually some form of team game played one day of the last week of the month during the April-October golf season. A shotgun start with a lunch following the round was initiated in 2010. These lunches attract a large group, and generally include some form of “award” (you may not want to be recognized in these award ceremonies). There are also cookouts following golf several times each season. When the greens are being aerated, an away game is generally scheduled for the Thursday round of that week. In 2009, the Regulars and the Players (another golf group at Big Canoe) decided to play the Chura Cup in honor of Dan Chura who passed away in 2009 after a short fight with cancer. Organized similar to a Ryder Cup format the Chura Cup pits a group of the Regulars against a group of Players in a two day match. The winner takes the Cup. The Regulars prevailed in 2009; the Players in 2010 and 2011.

Since the 2009 Chura Cup was not planned,

it was organized very quickly and the participants were chosen based on who was available to play. For 2010, the Regulars used a qualification period based on most points made in June and July play with a minimum of eight qualifying rounds. The competition was intense. For 2011, the qualification period was again utilized.

In 2010, the Regulars added an end of the year championship to the special events. That competition was followed by a cook out and recognition of the winner. In 2011, the most popular event was a North/South “Battle of Big Canoe” pitting those members born in the north against those born in the south-the northern guys got lucky. We can’t wait until the event again this year!

In addition to these special events, at least one golf trip is scheduled each year. In 2010, it was to Myrtle Beach. And in 2011, it was to World Woods outside of Tampa in April and back to Myrtle Beach in November. While these trips are open to all Regulars, they are generally limited to the first 16- 20 group members who sign up. As a group, the Regulars are very active in organized Big Canoe golf activities. Several members are on the POA Golf Committee, the MGA committee, the Handicap Committee, Marshals, and the Mountains Invitational (Member Guest) Committee. The Regulars have significant participation in the MGA golf tournaments, and have a history of placing high on the scoreboard in MGA events.

Aside from the Mountains Invitational, the most coveted participation is in the Ryder Cup. Each year, the MGA splits its membership into Juniors and Seniors based on the median age of the players. Each group then competes for 14 places plus an alternate. In 2011, there were 11 Regulars who qualified. We hope for a higher number in 2012!
