A celebration of the success was held on the 7th December and considering it was held at 7am in the morning the turnout was fantastic; with over 160 people in attendance.
BICSc Head of Group Operations, Pat O Mara, presented the awards and commented on the tremendous support KUSCO had provided for the team in order to achieve this phenomenal success - the first of its kind at any University in the UK. Pat acknowledged the cleaning team’s contribution to the health and wellbeing of the users of the buildings they provide services to and praised their efforts in successfully completing their mandatory units.
Sara Drake, KUSCO Chairman, commented: “I must congratulate you all on a very successful event. It was very well organised and great to see the impact on staff. A perfect
“Universities are about developing
people, giving them choices and opportunities. Kingston University is a community of students, staff and alumni and we want all of them to be part of what we do - learning, being stretched and developing.
“Our academic staff undertake research and develop new courses. It is just as important to me and to the university that our support staff, no matter what they do, have chances to undertake training, a chance to learn new
example of how investing in staff and celebrating their achievements can raise morale and deliver benefits for the whole organisation.”
Martin Chalker, General Manager, KUSCO, expressed sincere admiration and respect for his team and all who were involved in making the result so spectacular. “Many staff had no previous qualifications and so achieving the qualification was immensely satisfying.” Plans to move things forward with phase two of the BICSc training are already in motion. Martin confirmed that staff development would continue to be
a prominent feature in the Company going forward, to ensure that all the Company’s staff including the cleaning team continued to develop professionally and provide Facilities Management services at the cutting edge which would be a win-win situation for all.

things and gain opportunities to develop. Therefore the achievement of our cleaning staff is as important to me as the achievement of our students, the ceremony we held for the cleaning staff was as important as a student’s graduation.
“I have been proudly telling other Vice Chancellors about the achievement of our cleaning staff and about the commitment the University has made to developing people. The event, particularly when certificates were
awarded, was one of the most enjoyable that I have been to all year. The recipients had a great sense of camaraderie and cheered each other on - they were justified in their pride. I look forward to the next set of achievements from our support staff that we can celebrate.”
