It is estimated that 66,000 women in England and Wales are victims of female genital mutilation – the partial or total removal of external genitalia for non-medical reasons. The practice – illegal in this country – is often carried out by people with no medical qualifications using scissors, knives or razor blades. Shockingly, it is feared that 23,000 girls under the age of 15 in England and Wales are at risk. A SecEd special report this week asks how schools can help in the fight to stop this horrific practice – see pages 8 and 9.
