roedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin are participating in a nationwide clinical trial aimed at determining if a drug, Sanctura XR®

, treats overactive bladder more effectively than a more commonly prescribed medication. Overactive bladder – a sudden urge to urinate resulting in leakage or wetting – is a condition that

affects an estimated 30 million people nationwide. It differs from stress incontinence, in which coughing or sneezing causes a urine leak.

“Sanctura has very few, if any, interactions with other drugs, so participants are those who take at

least five other medications and/or supplements for other medical issues.” said Michael Guralnick, MD, principal investigator and a Medical College of Wisconsin urologist.

daily for one month, then take Sanctura XR® daily for the

remainder of the 19-week trial, sponsored by Allergan Inc., the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Sanctura XR®

. Participants must keep a daily record of their urination habits during the trial. “Overactive bladder typically affects women and older adults,” said Dr. Guralnick. “Depending

on the severity, some people are afraid to leave their homes, can experience skin conditions, sleep deprivation or bone fractures caused by falls when rushing to the bathroom.” n
