Posters and video use humor and smart phrases to convey safety messages

I

njury and trauma are no laughing matters, but when trying to reach people about the consequences of risk- taking, a tongue-in-cheek look at our behavior can

help get the message through. A new online video by Froedtert & The Medical College

of Wisconsin’s Trauma Center takes a humorous look at the lengths some of us go to in order to keep our pets safe from harm, while neglecting our own safety. Set to a catchy original song, a menagerie of pets wear helmets to go biking, skateboarding and the like, while their owners fail to don protective headgear themselves.

The Trauma Center also created posters to raise awareness of the dangers of risk-taking

behavior such as texting while driving, abusing prescription drugs, not taking precaution against sports concussions and smoking. They utilize startling images of various people in coffins, coupled with catchy phrases, plays on words and quick snippets of information.

“We’re always trying to find new ways to tell people how to prevent injury, especially

younger people and teens who often don’t believe that bad things will happen to them,” explained John Weigelt, MD, Medical College of Wisconsin trauma surgeon and chief of trauma surgery and critical care. “We want to reach them through catchy phrases, humor and by using a medium they’re very comfortable with, video on YouTube.”

The Trauma Center is an American College of Surgeons designated Level I facility, which

means it meets strict national standards, provides the highest level of specialty expertise and can provide total care for every aspect of injury. It also serves the community through education.
