A member of the banana family and a highly sought tropical plant originating from Ethiopia. The stun-

PARIS POLYPHYLLA #SPA05 Top Size
This rhizoma- tous plant from the lily family is a rare find for those interested in alpines. Na- tive to the cool- growing moun- tain regions of the Himalayas,
India and Chinia, the slowly spreading peren- nial sends up erect, smooth stems, each bear- ing a whorl of 6 to 12 slender, pointed, 3 to 7 inch green leaves. Above this whorl of foliage a yellow-green spider-like flower opens consist- ing of 4 to 8 outer tepals up to 4 inches long and thread-like 4 inch inner tepals, along with numerous yellow stamens. The flower may last up to 3 months, ultimately displaying spherical ¾ inch green capsules which split when ripe in late summer to reveal shiny red seeds. The plant is an interesting curiosity which many gardeners like for its rather bizarre flowers and elegant foliage. Occasionally the above ground parts of the plant may not appear for a year. PASSIFLORA Size: 3½ inch pots “Passionflowers” P. incarnata var. Maypop #SPA13 The hardiest pas- sionflower, native to the Eastern U.S. These vines are treasured for their complex flowers and lacy, deeply divided rich green foliage. Abundant large, showy flowers of white and lavender are produced all sum- mer. Flowers are followed by egg-size edible yellow fruit. Although the vines freeze to the ground each winter, the plants are root hardy to -20˚F and will regrow, flower and fruit the following season. Called ‘Maypop’ because it pops out of the ground each May (sometimes June).
