Winter & Spring Happenings Get Your Art On
One of the best cures for the winter doldrums is to get up and get out! Gallery Crawls in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District are not to be missed any time of year. So mark your calendars for January 27 and April 27. There’s live music, short films, free dance lessons, and, of course, lots and lots of art!
Must see galleries include Wood Street Galleries, SPACE, Shaw Galleries, CAPA Gallery, August Wilson Center for African American Culture and galleries at 707 & 709 Penn and 929, 937 and 943 Liberty Avenue. Be sure to check out the Cell Phone Disco along Tito and Exchange Way. The work features a surface that visualizes the electromagnetic field of an active mobile phone. Several thousand lights illuminate when you make or receive a call near the award-winning installation.
Pittsburgh: Young Again!
Pittsburgh is delighted to be the host city for numerous student and young adult groups throughout 2012 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. These youthful visitors will love exploring our city, with its many cultural attractions and fun things to do.
March marks the arrival of 10,000 members of the National Society of Black Engineers, the largest student-managed organization in the world. The conference takes place March 28 through April 2. Back for the second time, these young people are sure to love Pittsburgh, as engineers have long played an essential role in the city’s early days as a world leader in manufac- turing and continue to shape Pittsburgh’s economic landscape.
Come May 13-18, it’s the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. More than 1,500 high school students from 65 countries will display their independent research as they compete for $4 million in awards.
In October, Pittsburgh will host the 2012 One Young World Summit. The event brings together 1,500 to 2,000 of the world’s brightest, most engaged young leaders from 170 countries for a global youth leadership summit. The Summit takes place Oct. 18-22.
No wonder…The Pittsburgh Penguins’ season is in full gear at CONSOL Energy Center, one of the coolest – and greenest – hockey arenas in the country. The Pittsburgh Steelers are always a sell-out at Heinz Field, where tailgating has become a sport of its own. And, beloved PNC Park, considered one of the best ballparks in Major League Baseball, opens to a brand new season of hope for the Pittsburgh Pirates and their loyal fans.
For March Madness, the hottest ticket in town is the 2012 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament, slated for March 15 and 17. Hosted by Duquesne University at CONSOL Energy Center, Rounds 2 and 3 games mark the fourth time Pittsburgh is hosting the NCAA basketball champi- onship. The city shares the spotlight with other host cities as hoops fans enjoy the best teams in college basketball.
