MTH model are very close to the proto- type: inside length 30′-0″, inside width 9′-0″, length over end-sills 30′-8″, ex- ternal width 9′-11″, top of side height above rails 11′-0″, distance between hoppers 7′-0″. The six side panels are each 3′-7″ wide. The model has sepa- rately pre-applied painted wire grab irons and piping of 0.011″ diameter, which scales out to one inch. Included in a plastic bag are three accurately-shaped cross-ties for the purchaser to optionally install. The trucks consist of metal 33″-diameter, .010″-thick wheels on metal axles in plastic Andrews-style sideframes with brake beams. The model also has plas- tic corner stirrups, wire coupler levers, plastic air hoses and a retainer valve complete with piping. The door hard- ware includes door latches on left side of hoppers, linkages and longitudinal braces between the hopper bays. An air line runs along lower right car side. Rivet detail is found on interior bot-

tom slope sheets but not on the interior sides and ends. The model includes K schedule brake hardware with de- tached cylinder. Plastic magnetic cou- plers are secured in coupler boxes by Phillips head screws. The model has a vertical brake staff

and 18″-diameter horizontal brake wheel representing a car as modified from its original construction with a lever-style hand brake. A metal weight on the underframe between the hop- pers, gives the ready-to-run model a weight of two ounces. A removable plastic coal load is included. The model is securely packaged in a plastic “clam- shell” package. MTH initially offered this ready-to-

run hopper painted and lettered for the following 16 railroads: Clinchfield, Pennsylvania, Erie, New York Central, CCC&StL, Baltimore & Ohio, Chesa- peake & Ohio, CRP, Lehigh & New England, Pittsburgh & West Virginia, Denver & Rio Grande Western, Chica- go & North Western, Union Pacific,

Milwaukee Road, Norfolk & Western and Western Maryland. Of the 16 paint schemes offered only the follow- ing seven railroads were initially as- signed USRA twin hoppers: PRR, Erie, NYC, CCC&StL, B&O, C&O, and CRP. The paint is glossy with sharp clear lettering. The MTH website advises that “MTH items bearing item num- bers with an ‘81' may feature imagi- nary graphics or stray from historical accuracy.” The model represents a car modern-

ized from the original production, as it has accessories, such as a Wine door locks and vertical brake shaft, applied after the original 1918-1920 produc- tion. Over the years from 1918 to 1950’s there was great variation of ac- cessories and paint schemes. The let- tering schemes applied by each rail- road evolved over the years. The only sure way of determining if one of the offered paint schemes is appropriate or accurate for a specific time period is to find a photo of a prototype car with that paint scheme and the accessories on the model. The review model (MTH item No. 81-

97002) is painted and lettered for the Western Maryland, which did not own any USRA hopper cars. It is lettered with a re-weigh date of 11-38 and an incorrect built date of 11-12. Although every lettering scheme applied may not be historically accurate, this MTH model is an accurate and well-detailed model of the USRA steel hopper car as modified for the period 1920’s to the 1950’s. The price for the model is $29.95. A package of six models with different numbers is available for $169.95.—JOHN RIDDELL
