C/LStunt T
he Stunt crowd is always looking for a new replacement for the ven- erable SuperTigre .60 engine. Hori- zon Hobby is now selling an Evolu-
tion .60 for control line Stunt. This mildly timed .60 weighs in at 12.7 ounces (without muffler), well within the range of the Italian powerplant we so loved in the late ’70s and early ’80s. If I remember correctly, the ST .60 weighed in around 12 to 12.5 ounces and held the steady 2-4-2 break we liked to hear from this well-known engine. I needed a model to use as a test-bed, and
Byron Barker traded me back my Arcturus I, which was published in the March 1992 is- sue of FLYING MODELS. It was the second piped model to be published following the Bill Werwage Junar. The Arcturus I spans some 61 inches and encloses 675 square inches. My original model came off the board around 63 ounces and is now flying at 65 ounces with the Evolution .60 installed. The added weight comes more from the addition of oil soaking and added strengthening wires to the tail feathers than from power- plant changes. My eight test flights utilized 5.25 ounces
of 7.5% Sig Champion fuel with a Rev-Up 12–5W prop. Release rpm is right at 10,000 with an average lap time of 5.1 seconds per lap. Full flight time is about 6 minutes and 30 seconds on .018-inch × 62-foot Tom Mor- ris lines. The model used for the test bed was originally flown at the 1990 Nationals at Lawrenceville, Illinois. The Arcturus I was originally powered by an O.S. Max .40 VF and pipe by Randy Smith of Dacula, Georgia. The Evolution 60 gives the familiar 2-4-2
break even at the 10,000 rpm release. It had six break-in runs of 6 ounces of fuel each and became a single to double flip starting

motor right from the git-go. I will put my thumb over the venturi and pull in three flips of fuel to the venturi area. I then re- move my thumb and flip the engine eight times to aerate the fuel and air. Applying the battery to the plug, I will feel for a “bump” and then back-flip the prop, and it will begin firing and spinning in a very hap- py manner. I am impressed with the engine enough
to establish the process of deciding which model to put it in. A tongue type and a tube muffler are provided with the engine. I have used the tongue style with the review, but the heavier tube type might be used if
nose weight is needed. The engine uses a ¹⁄₄–28 threaded shaft and will fit all the old- er and present day extension devices. Look for this engine in your local hobby shop. The listed price is $174.99, but Horizon Hobby lists it for $139.99 plus shipping and handling. If it is not available in your area, go to

Allen uses a tachometer to set the engine rpm on one of the Arcturus I test flights (above left). This shot was taken by Charles Reeves at the McCracken

County Model Air Park near Paducah, Kentucky. The Arcturus I flies level and comfortable with the Evolution 60 installed in the nose (above right).
