Insurance Talk
Trust verify H
omeowner insurance policyholders should take a few simple steps
to enhance their peace of mind: • Request an annual policy review. Make sure that you have insur- ance to rebuild or repair your home for what it would cost in the current building market. Verify your policy limit will cover the full replacement cost of your home. Accurate, current, inventories of personal posses- sions make for faster and smoother claim settlements. Photos and videos provide easy ways to document your belongings.
• Be sure you understand how to fi le a claim prior to having a loss, keeping in mind that it is a process that needs to be worked through step-by-step. Assistance is available to you
through your insurance company.
• Ask about discounts for multiple policies, smoke or fi re alarms, or long-time patronage. Also, most companies provide discounts or consider good credit as one of the factors when determining rates, so it can really pay off to manage your personal fi nances.
• Don’t rely solely on website communication with your insurer. Call and talk to an agent, which may save you time and aggravation in searching for answers online.
Jim Rookard, Director of
Insurance Services for AAA Colorado notes, “It often pays to shop around for
insurance coverage. But, recognize the cheapest policy is not neces- sarily the best. A company that provides good customer service and fi ts your personal needs is critical, especially when it comes time to fi le a claim.”
