www.openinnovation.eskom.co.za The Open Innovation Pilot is one way in which Eskom is attempting to stimulate innovation externally. A detailed case study was planned for November 2011. The learnings, efficacies and innovation successes brought about by this project are to be captured.
Eskom have other ways in which they
capture innovation ideas internally. One way is where staff member log ideas onto the internal innovation website. Another way is that staff at respective power stations have a platform to discuss and suggest improvements in the plant’s operation and efficiencies.
A third way is to engage key management of the different business units to determine what their main challenges are.
Eskom follow a structured process during innovation. Some of the steps include: selecting a team with knowledge and experience in a particular field, defining the methodologies used, determining the applicability, ease of use and practical ability of the organisation to implement. When implementing external sources of innovation it is also important to determine which phase the product or technology is in – research phase, proof of concept phase or whether it is already commercialised.
