Mew Gull

Leading edges of the empennage and elevator hingeline are capped with ¹⁄₈ x ¼-inch balsa strips and rounded off (above left). The elevator is joined to the stab with flex nylon hinges at four places. The wing (above right) has a 2-piece

Fuselage: The flat fuselage sides are out-

lined with a triangular symbol on the draw- ing. Notice the upward jog in the aft fuse- lage, aft of the elevator hinge line. Also, each fuselage piece has a forward and aft fold line. Line the upper and lower edges of each fuselage side with ¹⁄₈ × ¼-inch balsa strips, as shown in the fuselage side view. The strips are recessed ¹⁄₈ inch in from

the fuselage edges, except over the wing saddle area where the strips are flush with the edge of the fuselage. Bevel the strips at the aft end of the fuselage so that the cardboard sides will come together. Add cardboard supports to each fuselage side

spar comprised of a ¼-inch light balsa web, capped top and bottom, with ¼-inch square spruce strips. Note the cardboard ribs, leading edge folds, ¹⁄₈-ply spar joiners at the dihedral break and doublers over the ply gear mount inserts.

below the bellcrank and the fuel tank. Make the firewall, A, from ¼-inch ply. Lo-

cate the mounting holes for the KM40 motor mount on the face of A. Drill the mounting holes and install blind mounting nuts on the back side. Drill a hole in A for a fuel tubing exit. Drill two holes in A and install blind nuts on the back side. These holes must align with the holes in C1 and are used to attach the removable cowl section. The following method should be used to

glue the firewall A in place: First, lay the right side fuselage panel flat on the work board. Prop up the front end of the fuselage nose by adding a piece of scrap cardboard ¹⁄₂

inch high under it. This will give the proper cant angle to the forward fuselage. Now glue the firewall A in place, making sure it is at a right angle to the work board, not the fuse- lage side. When dry, glue the bottom piece F5 in place, which locks in the proper cant angle. Glue the left side of the fuselage to A and

F5. Attach the fuel tank to the ¹⁄₈-inch ply support with rubber bands. Make a pushrod from ³⁄₃₂-inch wire and ¼-inch square spruce and attach it to the bellcrank along with the leadout wires. Place the assembly over the plan top view to insure that the fuselage sides are properly aligned. Install the tank
